Handyman? What exactly is a handyman?
Do
you remember Handy Andy?
I help out with difficult DIY jobs many homeowners
could not handle without pigeon holeing ourselves into one
particular trade. I have performed many kitchen makeovers
after a customer has been let down buy members of a specific
trade or suffered the expense of hiring plasterers, tilers,
carpenters etc. A handyman is simply able to take on a wider
variety of tasks than the average tradesperson and therefore
offering a more comprehensive service.
Did
you ever hear Handy Andy say that he could not finish the
kitchen till the carpenter had mitred the worktops and then
the tiler had been......
Handyman is a term referring to a person competent
in a variety of trade skills, repair, and maintenance
work.
HOWEVER!
despite performing similar tasks to just as high standard,
the main difference is that you do not pay the same amount
of money as so called specialists. For example my daily
rate is just £120 or just £20 per hour.
You try finding an engineer, fitter, carpenter or plasterer,
even painter and decorator for that amount.
Sometimes
its hard to find someone with necessary skills to be a handyman
that is willing to take the risk of striking out on their
own. Tasks for which a handyman is employed may be as simple
as a minor wall repair, or as complex as remodeling a bathroom.
Some
handymen are more skilled than others and perform more than
just general repairs. A good handyman is skillful, dexterous,
practical, clever, able, competent, and proficient in whatever
it is they are doing. Some handymen are licensed and insured.
Some are not.
Due
to the different laws / safety reasons, handymen are disallowed
from working on anything other than minor plumbing (for
example minor works such as replacing taps, connecting up
new sinks, fixing dripping taps or installing new washing
machines etc.)
Also
regulations mean handymen will not get involved electrical
wiring or gas-fitting services without being licensed in
the applicable trade.
Handyman
is a generic term used to describe a person with various
skills in home improvement. Some handymen are able to perform
anything from minor to major home repairs, even build an
entire house from A-Z.
However
most people expect services such as painting, minor plumbing,
minor electrical, furniture assembly and other kinds of
home repair. Furniture assemblers have grown in number ever
since the furniture industry has moved toward compact delivery
and boxes which fit through narrow hallways. In New York
City, it is well known that finding a good handyman can
be a difficult experience.
Many
skilled workers prefer larger jobs, and tend toward working
for bigger Contractors or building their own Contracting
company. The cost of hiring a handyman will vary, but most
often the best price comes not from the preliminary estimates
and comparison, but from trying to find the best, honest
handyman available, and hiring him. It's usually wise to
search for someone local, since most handymen willing to
do a smaller job would have to add extra fees for travel
time and expenses.
